HEALTH SERVICES Tips for Families * Eat foods that are good for you – vegetables, fruits, grains, and dairy foods. * Get daily exercise – walk with your baby, play outside with your toddler or preschooler. * NEVER shake your baby! Don’t throw your baby, even if you are playing, as this may cause the brain to swell, bleed or bruise which can cause blindness, seizures, mental retardation, other disabilities, or even death. * Arrange for your child to receive regular check-ups and scheduled immunizations. * If you call your doctor’s office/clinic, be sure to get the name of the person you speak with in case you need to call back or if questions come up. * Ask the clinic if they accept walk-ins and if there are any payments to be made up-front. * Be sure to verify the type of insurance (including Medicaid), the doctor/clinic will accept. * Ask what types of payment are accepted – cash, check, credit card. * Make sure you have the needed documents to help get the most out of your child’s visit – shot records, medical history, medications (type and dosage), insurance, guardianship, etc. Page 6 Back side of Tab 1 HEALTH SERVICES: Image of DPHSS Bonding Poster Page 7 Pediatricians Maria Alano, M.D. FHP Health Center, 548 South Marine Corps Drive, Tamuning, Guam 96913 Hours of Operation: Mon - Fri 9:00am - 4:00pm; Sat 9:00am -12:00pm; By appointment only Contact Information: Tel: 646-5825 Pediatric Extension 264, 165; Fax: 647-3529/646-4556 www.takecareasia.com Maria A. Educational Services Tips for Families * When choosing a child care center, cost should not be the only consideration: think of health and safety, trained and loving teachers, toys and materials that are educational and appropriate for your child’s age. * Anyone can love a child who is easy to take care of and is in a good mood. Look at how a person handles a crying, tantrumingchild. Notice whether the caregiver responds with love, patience, and positive, calm words, or with harsh and unrespectful words, and action. * Take time each day to talk with your child’s teacher. You are partners in providing the highest quality of care and education. * A high quality child care center will help your child learn about himself, his feelings, other people, communication, physical movement, and thinking skills. Text in colored box: MODEL CHILD CARE CENTERS There are thirteen (13) Model Child Care Centers in Guam recognized by the Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS), Division of Public Welfare, Child Care & Development Fund Program (CCDF) and the University of Guam Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research, and Service (UOG CEDDERS). These centers receive up to 100% reimbursements in child care tuition for eligible families and have received mini-grants to help supplement their resources and meet the accessibility requirements under the Americans with Disabilities Act. The Model Child Care Center Program is part of a Quality Rating System where child care centers are taking action steps to provide child care services that exceed the DPHSS requirements for licensure. Training and technical assistance are provided to these centers by UOG CEDDERS that focus on developmentally appropriate practices, including children with disabilities, health and safety compliance, early learning guidelines with standards, recognized curriculum, assessment program, and family partnerships. The centers shaded in yellow in this section have earned the designation of being a Model Child Care Center. Page 20 Back side of Section Tab- II. It is okay to ask for help when you need it. * To take care of your baby, you need to take care of yourself. * Your child’s doctor is a good resource to find other people who can help you be the best parent for your child. * Your child care teacher is a good resource for teaching strategies and to find other services and support for your family and your child. * Take the time during the early years to teach and love yourchild. The more time and energy you put into these years, the less heartache and challenge you will have when they are older. * When feeding, diapering, or bathing your baby, spend time singing, cuddling, and talking during these caring routines to support your baby’s development. * Children never outgrow their need to be touched gently and often – it helps them feel secure and calm so they continue to learn and grow. * Provide lots of sensory experiences – taste, touch, smell, sight, sound – to help build your baby’s brain. * It is never too early to introduce books to your baby. * Play is how young children learn best. * Children learn from your example.
