Welcome to the 2012 Nene Directory: A Directory of Guam Service Providers for Children Birth to 8 Years of Age! This fourth edition will provide guidance in finding contact information on services for young children in the areas of health and educational services, and family supports. In addition to ensuring that contact information is accurate for services that have been available on our island for some time, new programs and services have been included in this edition. One such new service is “Language Assistance Services,” that provides information on how to access translators and interpreters in a variety of languages used by our diverse population. Once again, the process of updating this directory is spearheaded by the Guam Early Learning Council (GELC), through the Guam State Advisory Grant and Project Tinituhon, projects facilitated by the University of Guam Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research, and Service (Guam CEDDERS). However, an undertaking of this magnitude must have strong partnerships to make it the best it can be. These partners include the Guam Department of Education, Division of Special Education, Guam Early Intervention System, Preschool Program, and Head Start Program; and Project Kariñu and Project Bisita I Familia, under the Department of Public Health and Social Services. Please keep in mind that making this directory available is just one strategy to help our young children and their families access the supports and services they may need. By doing this, we are one step closer to fulfilling the vision of the Guam Early Learning Council: that “all of Guam’s young children will have healthy minds, bodies, and spirits as the foundation for lifelong success.” Sincerely, Christine Calvo, First Lady of Guam, Co-Chairperson, Guam Early Learning Council Elaine Eclavea, Initiative Area Coordinator, UOG CEDDERS, Co-Chairperson, Guam Early Learning Council Footer: 4 Emergency Preparedness Prepare, Plan, and Pack Emergency situations can happen at any time, and at any place. Whether natural or man-made, these emergency situations can result in damage to property and endanger the health and safety of the general public. Guam regularly experiences natural disasters such as typhoons, earthquakes, and floods. Fires and disasters from hazardous materials are other occurrences that may endanger you and your property. Prepare Basic Supplies In the event of an emergency, you should be prepared to be self-sufficient for up to seven days. Preparing and maintaining an emergency supply of essential items can help ensure that you have adequate supplies to meet you and your family’s needs until help arrives. Basic emergency supplies include: • One week supply of canned and dried food items • Drinking water – at least one gallon per person per day • Flashlights and extra batteries • Battery operated radio • First Aid kit • Whistle • 10 - 30 day supply of medications • Toilet tissue and personal hygiene supplies • Water for flushing toilet in the event water is shut off • Trash bags, gloves, duct tape or masking tape, and plastic containers for storing items • Chlorine bleach for sanitizing • Propane stove and extra propane gas Footer: 5 Emergency Preparedness Make a Plan Emergency preparedness also means making a plan. Your plan should: Designate a place to meet if you and your family are separated from each other. Pick a primary and alternate contact number for you and your family to call if you are separated from each other. Establish a buddy system with other family members, friends, neighbors, or co-workers, and develop a plan on how you can help each other. Share your plan and your emergency contact list with members in your buddy system. Make a plan on how to secure your house in case you are not home or you are otherwise unable to secure your home. Identify another place to go to in case you need to evacuate. Establish your primary and alternate evacuation routes. If you use mobility aids, plan on how to take them with you and how to store extra aids at your alternate shelter, if possible. Pack a GO-KIT (Disaster Supply Kit) You should prepare a bag with your most essential items which you can grab if an emergency situation occurs, and you need to evacuate right away. Be sure the bag is not too heavy for you or someone to carry. Your emergency GO-KIT should include: * List of contact numbers * Dried foods and bottled water * Flashlight and extra batteries * Whistle * Small portable radio and extra batteries * Basic toiletries and sanitary items * Medications * Important documents, including medical information It is a good idea to: Place your bag near an entry or exit way so it can easily be carried out. Put reminder notices in your calendar or appointment book to check and replace items in your bag at least every 6 months. Let people in your buddy system know where your GO-KIT is located. Don’t throw your baby, even if you are playing, as this may cause the brain to swell, bleed, or bruise which can cause blindness, seizures, intellectual disability, other disabilities, or even death. * Arrange for your child to receive regular check-ups and scheduled immunizations. * If you call your doctor’s office/clinic, be sure to get the name of the person you speak with in case you need to call back or if questions come up. * Ask the clinic if they accept walk-ins and if there are any payments to be made up front. * Be sure to verify the type of insurance (including Medicaid), the doctor/clinic will accept. * Ask what types of payment are accepted – cash, check, and/or credit card. * Make sure you have the necessary documents to help get the most out of your child’s visit – shot records, medical history, medications (type and dosage), insurance, guardianship, etc. Footer: 9 Hospitals Guam Memorial Hospital 850 Gov. Look at how a caregiver handles a crying, tantruming child. Notice whether the caregiver responds with love, patience, and positive, calm words, or with harsh and disrespectful words and actions. * A high quality child care center will help your child learn about himself, his feelings, other people, communication, physical movement, and thinking skills. * Take time each day to talk with your child’s teacher. You are partners in providing the highest quality of care and education. Education Services Department of Education Tel: 300-1547 Jon Fernandez, Superintendent P.O. It is okay to ask for help when you need it. * To take care of your baby, you need to take care of yourself. * Your child’s doctor is a good resource for assistance in finding other people who can help you be the best parent you can be. * Your child’s teacher is a good resource for teaching strategies and finding other services and supports for your child and your family. * Take the time during the early years to teach and love your child. The more time and energy you put into these years, the less heartache and challenge you will have when they are older. * When feeding, diapering, or bathing your baby, spend time singing, cuddling, and talking during these caring routines to support your baby’s development. * Children never outgrow their need to be touched gently and often – it helps them feel secure and calm so they continue to learn and grow. * Provide a variety of sensory experiences – taste, touch, smell, sight, sound – to help build your baby’s brain. * It is never too early to introduce books to your baby. * Play is how young children learn best. * Children learn from your example.
